I’m told that ISIS survivors given refuge here in Germany have been struggling a lot with missing home. I’m thinking about this as I ride the train from northern Germany to the southern state of Baden-Württemberg, where many of the survivors now live. This place could not be more different from where they come from, in every way down to the landscape. Northern Iraq is all blue sky and browns; in southern Germany the palette is green. Just looking out at the horizon must be a constant reminder to them of how far they are from home.
