I haven’t really seen it happen yet so I have to ask; ‘glam’s not very masculine, but could a guy participate in this awesome project? I have a number of illnesses I’m dealing with (also PTSD, so power to you from someone who knows) and I’d really like to help out and submit what I can. Thanks for your time :)

hospitalglam:

Hey!

First off, a lot of guys have participated in the project, both on here and on instagram. They don’t participate as often as women or non-binary people do, but I suspect that has to with the traditional trappings of masculinity and difficulty in being seen as ill. If you want to participate, I’d love to have you.

This project is primarily about using spatial politics to further self-advocacy. I think anyone can do that, though if you want to get really into it, you could explore the visual power bestowed on men in media images. You don’t have to look glam, but considering the power exchange asked of us as both consumers and patients might be an interesting jumping off point for some cool shots. Technical tips are tagged under #hgtoolkit. Here’s the FAQ. Here is a step-by-step technique that I use for my photos. I do not use the selfie camera lens, because it makes for worse shots.

You are also welcome to participate by being visible in whatever way you are comfortable and advocating for yourself. Anything helps.
