WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22, 2016. 12:34 LOCAL TIME. DESPITE THE FACT THAT ARIZONA’S DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY HAS ALREADY BEEN CALLED IN FAVOR OF HILLARY CLINTON, RESIDENTS OF ARIZONA ARE STILL WAITING TO CAST THEIR VOTE. MANY HAVE BEEN WAITING IN LINE FOR UPWARDS OF 6 HOURS. AS IT BECOMES CLEAR THAT ARIZONA VOTERS HAVE BEEN MISLED, RE-REGISTERED WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT, LIED TO, DEFRAUDED, AND TURNED AWAY FROM POLING PLACES TOO CROWDED TO ACCOMMODATE THEM, MANY SOURCES ARE BEGINNING TO CITE VOTER SUPPRESSION AS THE TRUE REIGNING CHAMPION OF TONIGHT’S ELECTION.
Here is a White House petition to get a federal investigation into voter fraud/voter suppression in Arizona. Please sign this!! It’s speculated that Bernie Sanders voters were targeted and we deserve a chance at fair voting.
I normally don’t post this kind of thing here, since this is an RP blog, not a personal, but I am fucking pissed about this, because it happened to me. I live in southern Arizona, and I went to vote yesterday, only to be told by no less than six people that I was registered as an independent, when I’ve been a democrat since I first registered at eighteen.
I told them, “okay, fuck it, that’s not true, but I’m still voting, how do I vote?” And I got exactly the line described above, that “well, you COULD do a provisional vote, but it won’t be counted, it will just be thrown away when votes are being counted”, and I said “well why fucking give us the option then, what kind of horseshit is this?”
I was then asked to calm down, and perhaps to leave.
And I had to. Because I had fifteen minutes to get to work, and I didn’t have the time to argue with these people about my right to vote. I had anticipated getting in that relatively short line, casting my vote, and getting out – not being hassled and stonewalled for twenty minutes, eating up the time I’d had set aside for over a month to do my civic duty.
So. I didn’t get to vote in the Arizona primary, and as one young twenty-something in a very low economic bracket, I have no way of calling out or confronting the corrupt bullshit that kept me from doing so. I have no power. Bitch-ass bigoted retirees in my area get to vote all they damn well please, but I and many other minority millennials are being silenced, because that’s the only way to keep us from overwhelming the Republican candidates and keeping their racist asses out of office.
And I’m not exaggerating. I work in a liberal hippie town, and just yesterday, while complaining at work about what happened, I ran into no less than a dozen other people of varying ages and ethnicities who were prevented from voting Democrat by this “false Independent” horse shit. This is happening. They can’t confirm that we’re going to vote for the candidate they want, so they won’t let us vote at all. And I am so scared that I’m enraged. I’m seething. I’m terrified and I’m seething.
I haven’t been proud to be an American since I was too young to truly understand why I should or shouldn’t be. I was only proud when I was naive – and now, not even twenty-two yet, I’m already jaded and disillusioned beyond belief.
I am saltier than the Morton Girl right now and the worst part is that much of me isn’t even really surprised.
I live in Maricopa County and can attest that all the above is true! The line and parking was so bad that they had to shut down the road and were only letting in a few cars at a time. The wait to vote was hours long. It was insane!!!
This infuriates me, regardless of what candidate is hurting from it. What’s more infuriating? THIS SHOULD BE EVERYWHERE, ON EVERY NEWS STATION, ALL OVER THE PLACE
Procedures need to be evaluated, investigations need to happen, hard questions need to be asked, and that’s what the media is for. This should be right under Belgium on every major news site, but all I could find without google was a mention of ‘long lines’ by the NYTimes and ‘glitches’ by the WaPo. Searching Google News yielded a few more results, but NONE of the stories I found were any where close to front page news.
A free, independent, unbiased, investigative press is a cornerstone of democracy, and I’m afraid our press are failing at their duty.
Other than OP saying u of a was in maricopa (I’m thinking they meant ASU)…this is all true. I wish I wasn’t on mobile and could post the picture my mom send me of the line she was waiting in to vote. It was ridiculous. And outrageous. And unconstitutional.
