you all do know that the bechdel test was never supposed to be a metric for approving “feminist media”—it is actually a commentary on how incredibly alienating media is for lesbians when two women can’t even talk to each other about anything other than a man let alone love or fuck…. right? right??

this post got wildly popular in a way I did not expect. most of the tags in the notes are some variation of the above… which is so, so telling. the frustration in my tone is the product of active lesbian erasure. this concept is incredibly popular in mainstream feminism and the erasure of its lesbian origins is intentional. so yeah, I’m allowed to be a little angry about people misusing it.

to everyone directly & indirectly asking for sources: if you looked into alison bechdel’s work for ~5 seconds, you would know that it is entirely about lesbians. she is one of the most indisputably lesbian lesbians in existence. the fact that people continue grasping at straws to make her perspective about anything other than lesbian representation is disgusting, but sadly predictable. this whole thing is just ironic as hell.

tl;dr the bechdel test is about lesbians. the fact that people don’t know this and/or refuse to accept it is just further proof of lesbian erasure.

I thought ppl knew this!

For anyone wondering, the strip is “The Rule” from Alison Bechdel’s Dykes to Watch Out For.
