Hieronymus Bosch (1450 – 1516) – The Flood

I’m horribly fascinated by this picture, especially whenever I start trying to figure out exactly what’s inside that hole halfway up the hill. Is it demons? Animals? Dead people’s black and rotting butts? My money is on dead people’s butts, except that it’s so dark in there, it’s kind of hard to tell.

Amended to add: my husband thinks it might be two dead rotting blackened corpses, one face up and one face down. So…both, sort of.

Looks like one pair of buttocks and legs, and one head face-down on a pair of arms. So… two dead people, or one dead person broken in half.
