I don’t live in the US but this administration is currently scaring the hell out of me.
You might know me as your friendly neighbourhood melancholic who likes to dress fancy – but understand: my day-job for a decade has been to provide My Best Advice to government.
Remember SARS? I was in the middle of that. In Toronto. And we pulled in the best brains and experts in public health and epidemiology that we could. And we did exactly what they told us to do.
Your President is ignoring expert advice. He’s making a *point* of ignoring all the experts that say his actions are dangerous. In fact, he has pushed those experts out of the room and replaced them with an angry blogger.
The area I work in – people die if we don’t get it right. And pushing those non-partisan experts out of the room is not just wrong-headed, it’s dangerous. In a week’s time the US has been given a sharp turn into what I can tell you is a dangerous path.
I am as nervous as I was when I was told there was a virus that was killing people and we didn’t know what it was, how it was spreading, or how to to treat it. I am at SARS level fear of what is unfurling. It is an old feeling, it is gnawing at the pit of my core, where we hope we can manage but it is a huge unknown.
Government’s job is to keep you out of harms way – to the best of their abilities. A government that intentionally creates an atmosphere of chaos is dangerous – dangerous to *you*.
Not existentially – directly.
I can only urge you to reconsider.
What you do right now matters.
