The song was written by Woody Gutherie, a socialist, and it’s basically about living together with the land in common. The anti-property message is most explicit in this verse:

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me
Sign was painted, it said private property
But on the back side it didn’t say nothing
This land was made for you and me

The version kids learn leaves out about 2/3rds of the song

This, presumably, is why some people posted “Thank goodness Lady Gaga didn’t sing anything political” after the Super Bowl.
