yesterday i went to a gay bar for the first time, and I met two people. The first was a man well into his 70′s, who had only come out since his wife died. Even though he could barely walk, he knew every single person at the bar, and each one came over for a hug and to chat. The second was a transgender woman who, after two children and three grandchildren, had finally decided to live as herself. She was wearing heels and leather pants and makeup, and she was absolutely beautiful. she knew she was as well, and she was so proud and excited when people walked by and said “hey girl” without even thinking about it. point i’m trying to make is, it’s never too late to come out

My friend and old housemate figured out her gender & came out & decided to start transitioning in her early-mid 60s. We were housemates for like 8 years. When she started being my housemate, she identified as a male crossdresser. Then she went to gender-variant, then decided she was a transwoman (very much transwoman, not trans woman) who still identifies as gender-variant. She is (mostly, from what I can tell) cool with the fact that she’ll never pass. (Although there’s definitely some sadness there.) When she figured out she’s not required to is when she finally decided she was a transwoman.

She’s out at work as gender-variant. She has decided not to go with her new name and pronouns because she hasn’t decided to legally change her name yet, and her work badge has to have her legal name, so it’s just easier for her this way and she’s okay with that.

And she did all this in her late 50s to mid 60s.

It’s NEVER TOO LATE.

Remember, decades ago, it was de rigeur to figure it out in your 30s and 20s. About a decade ago, there was much talk about people figuring it out in their teenage years, with it turning towards younger teens. That was like the big media shocker. So this idea of “I didn’t figure out until I was 14, instead of figuring it out when I was 5, does this mean I’m not trans?” is utter & complete poppycock.
