I agree with this except I think the issue isn’t so much poor people saying “I won’t take this if rich people get it too,” it’s middle-class people (and everyone in North America claims to be middle-class, whether they’re rich or poor) saying “I won’t take this or even let the people poorer than me have this if there’s a chance the specific poor people I disapprove of could get any.”
