“Two young gay women who hang around 8th Street and 6th Avenue often come to the House of D to yell to their lovers who are imprisoned inside. …The Women’s House of Detention, familiarly called the House of D, is about to be torn down. It is a wretched old building and casts a long gloomy shadow over lovely Greenwich Avenue, in marked contrast to the expensive boutiques over which it towers. …The women, it seemed, were almost perpetually in their cells and there were few recreational facilities, except for a bit of space on the roof, not even a yard. …In an ironic way, the House of D became the home of several women who were the most active in seeking its destruction. Valerie Solanas, who had stood across the street selling her SCUM MANIFESTO in leaflet form at a time when few seriously considered radical actions for womens’ rights, wound up In prison after shooting Andy Warhol. The prison also managed to gobble up the Black Panther 13 women until they were vindicated and once briefly “hosted” Angela Davis.“ …Photo by #DianaDavies Text by #KarlaJay Story published in May 1974 issue of Her-Self, a feminist publication in Ann Arbor, MI. #lesbianculture
