During my studies in children’s literature I’ve found a lot more authors than I realized were LGBTQ of some sort. And every time I find one I’m so astounded because these stories brought me such comforts as a child, though I never realized the people creating them were a lot like me.
It goes as far back as Hans Christian Anderson (author of The Little Mermaid) and as recently as Brian Selznick (author of Invention of Hugo Cabret). The author of Frog & Toad was also but didn’t come out to his family until later in his life. Many believe the story represented his yearning for a same-sex relationship and that Frog & Toad are therefore in a relationship. Also Maurice Sendak, who wrote and illustrated Where the Wild Things Are was gay. He lived with his partner Eugene for 50 years and never told his family about it.
