Please stop ‘manspreading’ on public transportation, Madrid officials say – The Washington Post

I’m worried how much of this discussion around our bodies and public space is creeping dangerously towards and into territory where we start shaming fat people for taking up too much space on public transit. Esp. with the 1 body, 1 seat idea.

My thighs are large and my legs naturally spread. I physically can’t hold them together in the way I’m “supposed” to without having extreme discomfort and possibly injury. It could be conceived that someone would accuse me of manspreading (despite being AFAB). And, trust me, I’m aware of how much space my body takes and don’t need any more reminders. I’d be glad to only take up 1 seat… if they’d make seats large enough for me to only take 1 of. It’s not my responsibility to keep my body to a size that public transit approves of… or that the public approves of.

Be careful that your discussion around manspreading doesn’t start creeping into body policing territory.
