Watched Orson Welles’ The Immortal Story (Une Histoire Immortelle). It’s less than an hour long and was Welles’ first and last film in color. It is gorgeous-looking as any thing he ever did as far as composition and framing, and the color transfer on the Criterion disc absolutely pops.
Naturally, I wanted to know who shot this for film for Orson Welles. I found out it was by Belgian cinematographer Willy Kurant. The name rung a bell but I needed to check out his filmography.
I was very pleased to find out Willy Kurant’s filmography as a cinematographer.
He has shot the following (note this is an incomplete list of films):
- Masculin féminin
- The Immortal Story
- The Deep (Unfinished Orson Welles film)
- Pink Floyd at Pompeii
- A Grin Without a Cat
- Harper Valley P.T.A.
- Les créatures
- Trans-Europ-Express
- Le départ
- The Killing of America
- Tuff Turf
- A Burning Hot Summer
- La Jalousie
- Mama Dracula
- The Baby-Sitters Club
- Under the Sun of Satan
- Pootie Tang
This man has worked with Jean-Luc Godard, Orson Welles, Philippe Garrel, Agnés Varda, Chris Marker, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Jerzy Skolimowski, Melanie Mayron, and Louis C.K. What a fucking life and career.
Welles ought to have played Mycroft Holmes in something.
