I think it’s more that a lot of “straight” people (read: the people who ask that question) have attraction to the same sex that they just don’t act on. They think everyone feels that way but it’s not enough for them to “really” be queer/bi/pan/attracted to X, so they don’t act on it. They assume the way you figure it out is by acting on it. They don’t realize that no, it’s not like that; no, if you’re attracted to the same sex, you’re into the same sex.
(The “straight” is because those folks just think they’re straight when they’re probably not.)
But, yeah, Bob is a sweet, nice, smart, funny fellow. Likes water polo and plays the didgeridoo.
May also explain some of the “"but if we don’t constantly punish LGBT people *everyone* would turn gay” rhetoric. It makes slightly more sense if you believe heterosexuality is a state of constantly policing yourself for non-straight urges.
