南蛮人牙彫根付
Dutchman with a Rooster

Japan (c. 1750-99)

Ivory; 9.2 cm.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

I don’t know why, but this Dutchman with a Rooster really speaks to me.  Is it his big nose and tiny eyes and rounded cheeks that frame his goofy smile, or the way he’s standing up so straight as if to say “Yes, I am Dutchman with a Rooster and proud of it!  Here’s my Rooster!”?  Is it the casual way in which he’s holding his rooster, or the way that it is clearly uninterested in him and would much rather go find out if that thing on the ground is edible, but is humoring the silly man who gives him feed?  Is it how his legs are bowed and his chest puffed up?  I don’t know, but I like him.  Thanks medievalpoc and the Japanese artist who created this.  I’m glad that Dutchman with a Rooster is in my life.

I don’t think I love anything more than art history fanfiction
