A Winnipeg-area real estate developer has launched a lawsuit against 49 people who tried to defend ecologically sensitive wetlands that have historical significance to the Métis against controversial development plans.
Companies owned by Andrew Marquess, a well-connected Winnipeg developer, allege in court documents newly obtained by PressProgress that the 49 defendants participated in a “trespassing campaign” on the wetlands. Marquess claims this forced him to build a fence, install flood lights and hire a private security firm to “conduct surveillance” on the Indigenous and environmental activists.
Marquess had previously launched a lawsuit against several lead organizers. A new Statement of Claim, filed at the end of September, names dozens of new defendants.
Those defendants say Marquess is seeking “damages potentially in excess of $500,000” – a move they warn could have a chilling effect on peaceful protests.

These are issues that are important enough that if they were happening in the USA in the same frequency would get thousands of notes, but because they’re about Canada rarely get more than 100.

That slimy sonofabitch my fucking Métis family has been living in the Winnipeg/St Laurence area for fucking ever, since they left Red River, including near Parker Lands. My great grandparents raised their children on both new as well as traditional indigenous knowledge that included using the wetlands for survival, from duck hunting, fishing, to plant gathering. My great uncles learned how to hunt on the lakes and in the swamps and my grandmother and her siblings picked wiikenh (just like her great great grandfather did) and morels to sell to rich white Canadians to supplement their income because they lived in a household of 17 fuckin kids. This shit happens again and again, from the slaughter of the buffalo to kill the First Nations and Métis people, and now to literally bulldozing their land making it harder and harder to keep these practices alive. Fuck.
