Oh lord yes. Especially the “I have to throw a wrench in
this relationship in order to stretch out the story, so I’ll have one partner believe the neighbourhood gossip’s wild story about their partner
being in love with somebody else, and then dump him without asking him if it’s
true or giving any kind of explanation” variant.
