Literally complakning about free stuff being given to homeless people :^) only on tumblr

Not really. This is not my post, but I worked at a place that catered to a similar group of people.

Donations like this literally sit there piling on dust because we can’t use them. Or we try to give them to another organization. We usually do try to move it to someone else because we had limited storage.

We were always, always thankful, but what were we going to do with these items? People didn’t use these kinds of products. We gave them to the White people who came through, but they literally made about 30% of the population and we started having such an imbalance of donations like this that we would package them up for the White people secretly since the PoC, but in my community it was almost exclusively Black people, weren’t going to get anything.

I worked where I did for 11 and a half years. People gave hair care products all the time. We had about three people who donated makeup every year two to three times a year. I’m a very fair and light skinned Black person. In all those years, only once were donations given that were my complexion and one shade darker.

So, while this post comes off a bit more frustrating than I would have personally delivered it, it’s still really true.

We also spent a lot of time and energy not hurting donors’ feelings because of this, even though the majority of their donations were unusable or took a long time to unload to people who could use them. People didn’t consult us often they just brought them in. Again, totally generous, but it actually made more work for us and still only helped a small portion of people that these genuinely kind hearted people meant to help.

Another good reason to make your food bank/shelter donations in money if you can.
