Somebody asked me what Shinsuke smelled like once and I was like…I uh, did not smell him.  Even if it had occurred to me at the time to smell him, I would imagine that doing so would have been A Little Weird.  Dogs lean in for a sniff when they meet you but people uhhhhhh it’s probably not a thing people do?  Like that’d be up there w/ touching his hair or asking for a kiss or something, he’s not a sensory experience or an art exhibition, he’s a person.  Rule one for meeting people is try not to act like a fucking serial killer.

Actually someone asked me the same thing about Brad…I think that possibly, bizarre scent combination descriptions in fanfic create some very specific expectations about meeting beloved people, like they’re going to be surrounded by in a little cloud of Signature Aroma.  “Greasepaint and daffodils” is probably the oddest one I remember offhand and it stuck in my mind b/c I quite distinctly recall thinking ‘…the hell?’

Like that isn’t a knock on scent description in stories I just think that sometimes people rack up one more variety of unrealistic expectation for getting close to their faves.

(believe me, the times when I have noticed a Cloud of Personal Odour it has not been a pleasant one.  Smokers emit one, women wearing half a bottle of perfume emit one, fanboys who don’t shower emit one, cosplayers in hour 9 of a con emit one…particularly in numbers.  I’ve never met a single person that I got slightly into the personal space of and thought, “Boy they smell nice.”  Though admittedly I have limited experience in that regard)
