not to be too optimistic, but I think in the age of the internet pandora’s box is finally open on this one in many countries, and the cycle of quiet acceptance versus open repression/hate is ending there. things are probably going to get bad again where it hasn’t reached this tipping point, but for many tolerant places I think we’re too far into social (and legal) acceptance for most our gains to be turned back. right now I’m only scared for the trans folks’ future, which is still precarious.

A cis queer woman in the small town in Oregon I live in just got openly assaulted and called a dyke. The president is about to roll back a rule which makes it illegal to refused healthcare to trans people, meaning it will now be legal to refuse us healthcare. Public opinion polls on perception of lgb people have regressed for the first time ever. Polls or opinions on trans people are still terrible. Countries around the world continue to take a rightward nationalist turn which is almost always paired with traditionalist politics on gender and sex.

The internet works both ways. It has allowed reactionaries to organize, find each other, make political gains, and spread hatred, just as much as it has allowed lgbt people to enter the public sphere. All indications to me seem like things are going badly. I can’t stop thinking of gay and trans affirmation in Berlin during the Wiemar. We can’t take any of this for granted.
