For those unfamiliar, he took partial responsibility for the Iran-Contra scandal. Basically, he was a glorified arms trafficker. He took the money from weapons sold to Iran, and used it to helped fund the Contra soldiers (aka terrorists) in Nicaragua. And FYI… Iran was under an arms embargo at the time.
Let’s look at some of the things the Contras have been accused of…
targeting health care clinics and health care workers for assassination
kidnapping civilians
torturing civilians
executing civilians, including children, who were captured in combat
raping women
indiscriminately attacking civilians and civilian houses
seizing civilian property
burning civilian houses in captured towns
I’m sure glad Oliver was there to help fund all of that.
Apologists will say that Iran-Contra was all to save 7 hostages. And then somehow it turned into an effort to topple the corrupt Nicaraguan government.
So Oliver and his cohorts decided to hire really bad guys to take out really really bad guys. Solid plan. North was quoted saying it was a “neat idea.”
I’m sure the arms sold to Iran weren’t that big of a deal. Probably just a few crates of rifles or something.
Or giant surface-to-air missiles.
Mr. North was indicted for 16 felonies and convicted of 3. He was able to get a suspended prison sentence for congressional testimony.
Now he’s going to be in charge of the largest and most sinister gun lobby in the United States.
