“Thomas Malthus’s 1798 book on human population and resource scarcity was proven wrong within fifty years of its publication. Yet its absurd claims have continued to be taken seriously by many in
the affluent classes (right-wing and left-wing), because they place the
blame for destruction of the planet on the poor for merely existing,
instead of on rich and powerful for running a social system which
deliberately wastes resources in order to perpetuate itself. Thanos is just an extreme example of this mentality.”
-Solarpunk AnarchistsEven if we were to eventually reach beyond carrying capacity for
humanity, focusing all your energy on human population (rather than on
an economic system that requires endless growth, consumption, and
scarcity) is part of capitalism’s long list of propaganda tactics.
Demographers in recent years have actually argued that humanity’s global
population is set to plateau somewhere between 8 and 9 billion,
followed by a decline after the so-called “demographic transition”
takes place. And that’s still presuming a
capitalist world where the majority of humanity doesn’t have sufficient
access to resources (a prominent factor in higher birth rates); in an
ecosocialist world where everyone had genuine access to resources and
birth control, the global population would probably even start dipping a
lot faster.Yes, there
are real concerns with regard to consumption and population that we may,
at some point in ecosocialism, still need to address in a concrete
manner – for example, through a (democratic) sharp curtailment of
production (which could even result in more leisure time as a silver
lining) in that ecosocialist future, as well as a more assertive focus
on reuse and thrift exchanges for clothing and appliances. But
capitalism needs to be abolished first and foremost. Making the
conversation about the population control of the poor (and all the
racism and eugenics that implies), rather than on the inherently
anti-ecological functions of the capitalist system as a whole, is
something the Musks and Zuckerbergs of the world are all too happy to
abide. Don’t let them get away with it.
