Meanwhile at the Oriental Institute in Chicago, a demon is trapped at the centre of an Aramaic curse written on an incantation bowl. You can almost hear the tiny, indignant squawking.
If there’s anywhere I trust to keep that little Aramaic squawker in check it’s the Oriental Institute, tbh.
Cool demon bowl but I’m 99% sure those letters are Hebrew. I recognize the letters but don’t know what it means, it could be written phonetically though.
Interesting! I checked the Oriental Institute’s online collection catalogue to see for sure, and I couldn’t find a photo of this bowl in their collection searching under either language (that doesn’t mean much, they haven’t fully photo-catalogued) but I did find several similar bowls in Aramaic. Intriguingly, one turned up in both the Aramaic Bowl and Hebrew Bowl searches I did, though the official catalogued language is Aramaic. Though a further Google search indicates that Aramaic and Hebrew are super closely related anyhow.
Well, there’s only one way to be sure. I’m going to have to make the ultimate sacrifice and go to the Oriental Institute to find this little demon for myself.
