There are a lot of articles floating around about Serena Williams right now. Most of them relating to her awesome Wakanda-inspired catsuit. Some people don’t like it even though it could literally STOP HER FROM DYING. (It was designed to prevent blood clots.)
But that isn’t what I wanted to talk about.
This is sort of a public service announcement.
You might want to consider not reading internet comments on stories about Serena. Even if the story has a positive slant, I still wouldn’t recommend it. If you are of sound mind and have great mental fortitude, it’s still a crap fest and you probably shouldn’t go there.
I made that mistake and I ended up losing faith in humanity and getting rather depressed. It’s similar to when there is a story about Michelle Obama. I think the comments about Serena were even a bit worse.
It was this perfect storm of racism, misogyny, sexism, body shaming of muscular women, and transphobia.
You’re probably wondering… “Transphobia? She isn’t transgender.”
And you’d be correct in saying that.
But to misquote Dr. Ian Malcolm, “Assholes find a way.”
I think it upset me partly due to the randomness. There didn’t seem to be a catalyst for many of these comments. People were just blurting out terrible things that did not match the context of what was being discussed. It was just pure hate for hate’s sake.
Serena is not even that controversial or divisive. She is really good at swinging a racket at a ball. She seems like a good mom. A good role model. And yet, I have never seen such concentrated meanness.
To counteract this layer of comment filth I acquired I’d just like to say…
I think Serena is great and she looked boss as heck in that anti-death catsuit.
