so my friend is studying abroad in germany this semester

According to one of the reblogs (which seems to be from a deactivated account) these are all German sayings literally translated into English.

@perrydotto, care to confirm/deny this?

This is absolutely correct!

“You can me once” is “Du kannst mich mal” which properly translates to “You can kiss my ass”.

“What must that must” is “Was muss das muss” which properly translates to “What must be done has to be done”.

And “now butter by the fishes”, a personal favorite of mine, is “Jetzt Butter bei die Fische”, which properly translates to “Now lets get serious”.

This is pretty damn hilarious and I’m glad I saw it.

Thank you for explaining these.

Some Unattractive 90s Nostalgia

copperbadge:

Talking about Forever Knight has given me a weird nostalgia for early-90s cult television. There’s an aesthetic there, I’m not sure what kind of -punk to call it. It was all men in boxy suits with dubious-in-retrospect hair, women with huge curls and attractive chins and STEM degrees, sexual tension that obviously wasn’t entirely intentional. The poor film quality, the drizzly Canadian weather, the drizzlier Canadian accents on all the extras. Law enforcement, when present, rarely involved a discussion of warrants or went to trial. Huge overcoats and flashlights. Anyone with an English accent was probably evil or at the very least a spy.

The X-Files, VR5, Forever Knight, Strange Luck, Due South, there must have been others. ST:TNG would qualify if it wasn’t shooting for such a utopian aesthetic. I would even qualify Mystery Science Theatre 3000 on some aspects (and honestly if they could have done a send-up of early 90s cult TV they would have, I can picture that skit in my head). I feel like early Stargate drew on it. Babylon 5 had some dubious hair and strong chins. ETA: HIGHLANDER OH GOD. THE SENTINEL TOO PROBABLY?

ETA2: Farscape, Witchblade, and Kung Fu: The Legend Continues. I only watched Farscape, but yes. I have such hilarious dim hazy memories of ads for Kung Fu TLC from watching Due South at midnight.

So, what, Ninetypunk? Scullypunk?

Anyway, I’m gonna grow my hair back into a widow’s peak, buy a baggy suit and a huge overcoat, take my flashlight, and go investigate someone with an English accent. I will probably break my chunky candybar cellphone in a suspiciously Vancouverian alleyway.

Hear that cracking sound in the distance? It’s my hEART BREAKING

why take their rosaries??? what the fuck does that accomplish? You’re already taking everything else from them, at least let them have god

But what about their religious freedom? No outrage from the cloistered wealthy mega churches and their team of lawyers?

so why are Christians in the US not getting into a huge snit about this??

PICTURES LIKE THIS SHOULDN’T BE ALLOWED THE ENVIRONMENT TO HAPPEN

This is sickening

Abolish ICE

https://www.newyorker.com/culture/photo-booth/a-janitors-collection-of-things-confiscated-from-migrants-in-the-desert

Heres the article. Its about a janitor who took the confiscated items that were thrown away and turned it into a photography project. It says he’s keepimg them in hopes that one day theyll be housed in a museum dedicated to migration

Reason #12785348 on why this is bad. In the Catholic faith (most Hispanic immagrants are) you are not allowed to throw away a rosery. You have to either burry it or burn it.

But wtf ICE is literally saying fuck Mexican christians and american christians aren’t even praying for them

Guys Evangelicals don’t consider Catholics to be true Christians. They consider them to be idolators.

Sometimes Catholics in protestant communities will even say ‘Well, I’m Catholic not Christian’ but tbh I’ve only ever heard this from white Catholics who like to think of themselves as a minority in non-diverse spaces

But where are they speaking up for their fellow Catholics

whatdoyoumeanitsnotawesome mentioned you on a post “y’all keep complaining about your series finale, but bbc literally…”

@copperbadge omg sam in 1996 i was 12 and had no supervision and i was doing the EXACT SAME THING

Oh my god, this hit me right in my heart. 16 year old me wants to like, sideways-hug 12 year old you on the couch and order us a pizza.

lynati

Yeah. There we* are, just sitting there, wondering how the next season is going to look with so many cast members gone and Natalie now a vampire, since LaCroix is CLEARLY going to change Nick’s mind about letting her die, and then:

“No. You…are my closest friend.”

jmathieson-fic

I was in grad school at the time, so my sleep schedule was fucked up anyway, but this was pretty much exactly my reaction to watching the series finale of Forever Knight.

What I’m taking from a lot of comments is that nobody knew it was the season finale, which kind of makes me feel better.

saynotodyedflowers

Forever Knight was SUCH a trip omg. Like for real if you told me it was actually written by real dead vampires on cocaine I would BELIEVE you because only someone high on blood and angel dust could come up with something that gloriously bizarre. I have no idea why we loved it so much but it was SO great.

I’m very tempted to rewatch it, because I remember almost nothing about it other than Nick buying big macs for some reason and LaCroix being a vampire radio DJ

I a little bit wanted to be LaCroix. He seemed like he had life fuckin’ figured out.

oh man, that and “THE ENDLESS….FOREVER…..NIIIIIGHT.”

Of all the filmed-in-Toronto shows made in that era, it was the one that admitted it was set in Toronto.

Half of being trans is being hypervigilant against transphobes. Like, I spent 15 minutes scrolling down on a blog that I would be super interested in just to make sure that it wasn’t going to start reblogging stuff from my favorite transmisogynists. Turns out that my hypervigilance was right again.

Things to look for:

  • References to “vagina envy.” This is what initially got me scrolling. This alone isn’t a sure indicator.
  • Andrea Dworkin quotes without criticism
  • Reblogging from troll accounts like confirmed-/-terf

Most cis wlw on Tumblr are, in fact, supportive of trans people. Most cis wlw who mention “hating men” are not using this as an attack on trans women. However, because of my experience with the small, insular, and vitriolic trans-exclusionary feminists on Tumblr, I have learned to be hypervigilant and it Really Fucking Sucks and Really Fucking Hurts when I am right.

I am a lesbian. This kind of blog would have been My Shit. But I’ve been taught to distrust the very women I connect with the most. I’ve been taught to feel afraid in my own home.

Being a transgender lesbian is constantly walking on eggshells to not prove them right. And their standards are ever changing so it’s inevitable that you’ll prove them right. Righteous anger will be taken as “male propensity towards violence,” which closely mirrors the way men see outspoken women as “shrill.” If we do anything to fight back outside of debate within their terms, we are immediately casted as “violent men.” They will not be satisfied until we shut up, lie down, and die.

Cis wlw can and should reblog this. Help me remember my allies.
