I think this is actually the best example I’ve seen of a trained ‘smile/snarl’ cue! I was expecting it to be really scary from the preview frame, so I’m really pleased after watching all of it. What lets me say that is that you can see the whole clip, so there’s no guesswork involved – you have the before, during, and after the behavior.
The dog is comfortable at the beginning of the clip, and you can see even when she starts petting him on top of the head he’s pretty chill. Soft eyes, soft face. Ears go back a little from the petting, but that’s a fairly normal thing to see with relaxed Japanese breeds.
Then she gives him the cue ‘where’s satan’ and he immediately goes directly into the lip curl and starts to snarl. It goes on a little longer than I expected, seems like she’s re-giving the cue to keep him going, but then around 0:45 she stops and even before the lip-curl has fully relaxed he’s looking up at her for affiliative contact with soft eyes again. I was a little concerned that her petting his back always correlated with the lip curl – wondered if that was part of the cue, like if he didn’t like it or that hurts him – but at the end she pats him rather vigorously on the back and he doesn’t react.
This looks like a solid trained cue. There’s nothing like you normally see in ‘smile’ videos of a camera or something being shoved in a dog’s face – it’s filmed at a distance, with a wide view, and it shows lots of time beginning and after, which most videos don’t do.
10/10 pure and perfect satan impression.
