ultralaser:

i just read some awful bit about how ‘hey did you hear there’s a name for the sub-generation (76-83) between gen x and millennials?’

and the intro manages to be, not, hey we, this mini-generation, had a distinct foundational experience in the liminal space between pre-internet gen x and hard wired millennials

but instead just another boring ‘hey i was never coddled by participation trophies or subject to internet bullying, but i did grow up running unsupervised in pastoral suburbia’ which is, like, literally the most smug, condescending gen x thing i’ve ever fucking heard, so, not sure why you need to carve out your own identity group instead of picking a side between gen x and the former gen y, but okay

so i’m super uninterested but anyways then comes the big drumroll and the reveal of the name for this crossover generation who were gen x as kids but millennials in college i guess, and it’s

xennials

//xennials//

‘hey, did you hear? there is a now a name for the ppl between generation x and millennials’

‘and it is XENNIALS’

THIS IS THE WORST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD

That is definitely a name thought up by someone who was a pop-culture consuming kid in the 90s

I’m pretty sure I recall thinkpieces at the time trying out names like “Generation Y” and “Thirteeners” (I forget the rationale behind the latter).
