I’m a firm believer in the ideal that if you have to label a comic character with text on their chest, be it a political comic, angsty webcomic, or otherwise… you suck shit at making comics.

I googled Sir John Tenniel’s 1890 political cartoon “Dropping the Pilot,” and you have a point – Tenniel’s original image doesn’t have labels on the figures or the ship, like all the subsequent cartoons that reference it do.
