“The best thing to do is leave eastern Kentucky. There’s no hope for us.” We are raised hearing this mantra as often as we hear the Lord’s prayer. I understand it. Believed it, even. But maybe part of the reason (for there are many reasons) that there’s no hope is because everyone who has any access to any appreciable degree of education or money is being told to run from the time they’re in diapers, leaving behind only those who don’t have access to much of anything beyond Oxy. This region won’t survive the loss of coal unless we build something to replace it, but how can that happen when those with the most resources are taught to write this place off as a lost cause?

Well spoken explanation of the cyclic poverty of Appalachia.

THIS. So much of Appalachia is like this, including where my parents are from.

And, yes, they left.
