My Mother’s Child

copperbadge:

Mum: Your stepfather found some brothers of my grandfather who lived in Chicago in the forties, apparently.
Me: Oh neat! What if they were bootleggers!
Mum: I hope not. I hope they owned a steakhouse.
Me: *not questioning this strange hope in the slightest* Fun fact, in the early part of the century all the best steakhouses in Chicago were run by Chinese immigrants. It was a thing.
Mum: I wonder if either of them are buried in Chicago.
Me: If they are, I’m happy to go visit the tombstones.
Mum: Good. Get some DNA samples while you’re there.
Me: …okay, but you’re paying for the shovel.
